In the heat of World War II, the medium M4 series with the 75mm gun was considered the best tank in the US Army. Given the new German Panther and Tiger tanks, even the M4 series had to upgrade its cannon. The new 76 mm M1 tank gun had far better anti-tank capabilities and was better suited to combat with increasingly heavily armored enemy tanks. The use of the new gun also meant that a new turret had to be used. The M4A3 chassis was equipped with a new liquid protection system for the ammunition and was designated M4A3 (76)W.
