The Sd.Kfz. 251/7 Ausf. D was the engineer version of the German Sd.Kfz. 251 medium armored personnel carrier and served as an armored transport and support vehicle for armored engineers. Its main task was to safely transport engineer units to their deployment location and support them in tasks such as overcoming obstacles, constructing makeshift crossings, and conducting demolition and security operations.

The Ausf. D was the last and most simplified production version of the Sd.Kfz. 251. Compared to earlier variants, the hull was simplified, reducing the number of armor plates and accelerating production. The armament was essentially the same as the standard vehicle and consisted of one or two 7.92 mm MG 34 or later MG 42 machine guns. However, on some vehicles, the front machine gun was replaced with an anti-tank rifle (PzBüchse 39). This rifle fired the powerful 7.92 × 94 mm cartridge and was intended to give armored engineers a better means of engaging lightly armored vehicles, firing ports, or fortified positions at close range. Although the anti-tank rifle was no longer effective against modern tanks, it remained useful for specialized operations.

In addition, the Sd.Kfz. 251/7 carried extensive engineer equipment. This included tools, explosives, wire cutters, scaling ladders, and other equipment for technical operations. Particularly striking were the lightweight assault bridge sections attached to the sides of the vehicle. These allowed the engineers to quickly cross small ditches, obstacles, or damaged sections of road. The bridge sections were light enough to be moved by hand and significantly increased the mobility of following troops.

The vehicle was powered by a Maybach six-cylinder engine producing approximately 100 hp. Like all Sd.Kfz. 251 versions, it featured a half-track chassis, combining the off-road capability of a tracked vehicle with the steering characteristics of a wheeled vehicle. The crew typically consisted of two vehicle personnel and a squad of armored engineers.

The Sd.Kfz. 251/7 Ausf. D saw service on all fronts of World War II and played a crucial role, especially in rapid advances. Its ability to transport engineers and their specialized equipment directly to critical points under armored protection significantly contributed to the mobility of German armored and mechanized infantry units. The occasional use of an anti-tank rifle instead of the front-mounted machine gun underscores the vehicle's special role as a versatile support platform for armored engineers.

The Infanteriekarren 18 (If 18) was a light, two-wheeled transport cart of the German Wehrmacht, primarily used to transport ammunition, supplies, and equipment. Usually pulled by a horse, it could also be moved by soldiers when necessary. Thanks to its simple and robust design, it was particularly well-suited for use in difficult terrain where motorized vehicles had limited capabilities. The If 18 played a crucial role in supplying front-line troops, especially on the Eastern Front. Although it appeared unassuming, it was an indispensable tool of military logistics, helping to deliver supplies to the front lines.
