The Tiger I (Pz.Kpfw. VI or Sd.Kfz. 181) was equipped with 725 mm wide combat tracks Equipped to achieve maximum off-road capability, this considerable track width significantly reduced ground pressure but exceeded the permissible loading gauge for rail transport. Strategic rail transport therefore required a reduction in the vehicle's overall width, which was achieved by using narrower 520 mm transport tracks. On early production vehicles with rubber-tired road wheels, fitting the transport tracks to comply with the permissible transport width required removing the outer row of road wheels. With the introduction of steel road wheels in 1944, this additional step was no longer necessary. The transport tracks could now be fitted without any modifications to the running gear. The 520 mm transport tracks were not simply a reuse of earlier designs but a further development of the track system tested in the VK 36.01 (H) program. Details such as track pins, guide horns, and load-bearing capacity were adapted to the increased weight and operational demands of the production Tiger I.
