The British Type C Mk. II bomb trolley was one of the Royal Air Force's (RAF) most important pieces of ground support equipment during World War II, used to transport bombs between ammunition depots and the aircraft being armed. An evolution of the Type C Mk. I, it featured side loading ramps that allowed bombs to be rolled onto the trolley more easily. This improvement significantly sped up the loading process and made handling heavy bombs easier. The trolley featured a robust steel frame with four pneumatic-tired wheels—the front ones being steerable—and adjustable cradles to accommodate bombs of various sizes. It could carry a total bomb load of up to 6,000 lbs (approx. 2,720 kg) and was moved either by hand or by airfield tractors, such as the Standard N or later David Brown models. The Type C Mk. II was used at almost all RAF airfields to arm aircraft such as the Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, Short Stirling, de Havilland Mosquito, and Bristol Blenheim. After transport, the bombs were loaded into the aircraft's bomb bays using hoists or bomb lifters. Thanks to its rugged design, the trolley remained in service for many years after the war before being replaced by more modern munitions vehicles. Today, the Type C Mk. II is one of the best-known RAF ground vehicles from the World War II era and has been preserved in several museums.
