As Britain struggled to develop tanks that could compete with the superior German tanks, it decided to convert the M4 Sherman tanks supplied to Britain under the Lend-Lease Act.
The tank, called the Sherman Firefly, was equipped with a long-barreled 17 pounder (7.62mm) anti-tank gun, which was significantly more effective than the original 75mm gun and could penetrate the frontal armor of a Tiger I at over 1000 meters with normal ammunition.
Most Fireflies were built on the basis of the M4A4 tank, designated the Sherman V by the British, while some were built on the basis of the earlier M4 or Sherman I.
Vehicles equipped with a 17-pdr. gun upgrades were given the suffix C and the resulting vehicles were named Sherman VC and Sherman IC.
