The military quad bike is a British invention, the development of which dates back to 1943.
The Standard Ultra Lightweight and Jungle Airborne Buggy models were in the final stages of testing when World War II ended and the orders were canceled.
The first Japanese quad bikes arrived in 1982 and began replacing motorcycles in military service in the following years. The first quad bikes ordered in larger numbers by the British Army were based on the Yamaha 450 and were equipped with a diesel engine and a NATO hitch.
They also featured run-flat tires, a small winch, and infrared spotlights.
In British service, the quad bike is designated as a Small ATV (All Terrain Vehicle), and over 1,000 had been delivered by 2015. It is commonly used with a small trailer, the Logic SMT 171B or SMT 120B, both of which have a payload capacity of 150 kg.
The Small ATVs were first deployed in Afghanistan, where they were used by special forces to transport sniper teams and as general cargo carriers.
The small ATVs quickly proved indispensable, as they could reach even difficult-to-access areas relatively quietly.
The vehicles can be easily transported by helicopter, and an aluminum Quad Bike Bridge (QBB) further enhances mobility.
In offensive operations, the small ATVs are equipped with machine guns and grenade launchers. They can also be used for casualty evacuation and can carry two stretchers.
For rapid transport, the small ATVs are loaded into logistics containers; a 20-foot Hi-Cube container can hold up to 10 vehicles. The Quad Bike is currently being further developed for new tasks, including battlefield communications and drone control.
