The VW T3 Transporter was produced from 1979 to 1992 and was the third generation of Volkswagen's successful Transporter series. With its boxy body and rear-mounted engine, it represented the final iteration of the classic Transporter concept. The T3 was available as a panel van, pickup truck, minibus, and camper van and enjoyed great popularity among businesses, families, and travelers alike.

The flatbed version was particularly versatile, offered with both single and double cabs. It was frequently used by tradespeople, municipalities, utility companies, and in agriculture and forestry. The open cargo bed was ideal for transporting building materials, tools, machinery, and other bulky goods.

The T3 also saw widespread military use. The German Federal Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) employed it as a light transport, liaison, and supply vehicle. The flatbed versions primarily served to transport materials, equipment, and personnel within barracks, training grounds, and field camps. Depending on the task, they could be equipped with tarpaulin covers, radio equipment, or special mounts for military gear. Their reliability, ease of maintenance, and high suitability for everyday use were particularly valued. With the Syncro versions, available from the mid-1980s onward, the Bundeswehr also gained a more off-road capable vehicle that could be used on unpaved roads and in light terrain. Besides the German Armed Forces, other European armed forces, as well as government agencies and aid organizations, also used the T3 for transport and support tasks.

Thanks to its versatility, robustness, and distinctive design, the VW T3 remains one of the most popular commercial vehicles of its generation and an integral part of the Bulli's history.
