The M2 ‘ALLIGATOR’ Bridging system was a German design of amphibious vehicle which can be adapted for use as a vehicle ferry with 2 or 3 vehicles, or as a bridge with 10-30 units. In the water the main wheels retract, and propellers in the main hull and pontoons propel the vehicle. On land all equipment folds away for road transport.
The M2B version was used by the British and German armies, and was rated to carry up to the Chieftain MBT, but with the introduction of the Challenger-1 MBT the British vehicles were updated to M2D with strengthened ramps, air bags and compressors.
