The Hanomag SS 100 "Gigant" was a heavy road tractor developed and produced by Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG (Hanomag) starting in 1936. Originally designed for civilian freight forwarding as well as industrial and heavy-load transport, the vehicle quickly proved ideal for military tasks due to its exceptional pulling power. With the outbreak of World War II, the SS 100 was adopted in large numbers by the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe, becoming one of Germany's most important heavy tractors. More than 6,000 vehicles were built by the end of the war; production continued for several years after 1945 in a slightly modified form known as the ST 100.

The Hanomag SS 100 featured a robust ladder frame and was powered by a water-cooled, six-cylinder Hanomag D 85 S diesel engine with a displacement of 8.55 liters and an output of 100 hp. Power was transmitted via a four-speed gearbox with an additional reduction gear, providing a total of eight forward gears. With a curb weight of approximately 6.8 tons, the tractor achieved a top speed of around 35 to 45 km/h, depending on the transmission configuration. Its greatest strength, however, was its enormous towing capacity: on paved roads, the SS 100 could haul loads of up to 20 tons, making it one of the most powerful road tractors of its time. Compressed-air brakes for the towing vehicle and trailer, along with an optional winch, further expanded its operational capabilities.

During World War II, the Hanomag SS 100 saw service across almost all branches of the armed forces. In the Luftwaffe, it served primarily as a tug for heavy bombers—such as the Heinkel He 177, Junkers Ju 88, and Messerschmitt Me 323—and for hauling bomb and fuel trailers. The Army utilized it to tow heavy artillery pieces, specialized trailers, and bridging equipment. Furthermore, the SS 100 played a pivotal role in transporting the V-2 rocket; working in tandem with specialized *Meillerwagen* trailers, it moved the delicate missiles between manufacturing plants, depots, and launch sites. Its exceptional reliability and immense pulling power made it indispensable for these demanding tasks.

To this day, the Hanomag SS 100 enjoys an outstanding reputation among historians and technology enthusiasts. Its distinctive engine hood, forward-positioned cab, and robust fenders give it an unmistakable appearance. Thanks to its versatility, it was one of the most well-known German prime movers of World War II and can still be seen today in numerous historical photographs, museums, and at vintage vehicle events.

For scale modelers, the "Giant" is a particularly appealing vehicle, as it can be combined with a wide range of trailers, artillery pieces, aircraft, or V-2 transporters to create authentic dioramas.
