The first generation of GM vehicles, developed as part of the CUCV (Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle) program, was based on the civilian Chevrolet C/K series and included the M1008 pickup truck, the M1009 utility vehicle, the M1010 ambulance, the M1028 shelter carrier, and the M1031 chassis-cab.
Between 1983 and 1987, nearly 75,000 vehicles were built, most of which went to the U.S. Army (68,210); the rest went to the USAAF (3,578 vehicles), the U.S. Marine Corps (2,973), and the U.S. Navy (504).
They served with U.S. forces worldwide and participated in the Gulf War and the United Nations Operation in Somalia.
Although the US military began phasing them out in 1994, several CUCVs remained in service in the following years and were also used by the SFOR contingent in Bosnia in the second half of the 1990s and even in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
Many CUVs were also sold or donated to friendly countries such as Albania, Greece, Latvia, and Lebanon.
The basic version of the vehicle was equipped with a tarpaulin for the loading area.
