The Kübelwagen (Volkswagen Type 82) is a German light off-road vehicle from the Second World War. The first prototypes were built between 1938 and 1939, and series production began between 1940 and 1945. A total of approximately 53,000 units of this vehicle were produced. The Kübelwagen was approximately 3.74 meters long, 1.6 meters wide, and had an overall height of 1.65 meters. Its curb weight reached 725 kilograms. It was powered by a single 4-cylinder engine with an output of 23 hp or 25 hp and a displacement of 1 liter or 1.1 liters. The top speed was 80 km/h.
The Kübelwagen was developed for the needs of the German Wehrmacht as a new, lightweight off-road vehicle suitable for transporting at least three soldiers, a light machine gun, and a supply of ammunition. To minimize production costs and accelerate research and development, the vehicle's design was based on the civilian VW Type 1, the later popular "Beetle."
Interestingly, it was initially determined that the chassis and rear-wheel drive (4x2) would remain virtually unchanged. After field trials, experimental combat use during the fighting in Poland in 1939, and a variety of minor and major upgrades, production of the Kübelwagen began at the VW factory in 1940. It should be noted that the first batch was manufactured in Stuttgart, but production was quickly relocated to Wolfsburg.
The Kübelwagen proved to be a highly successful vehicle, used by the German army on virtually all fronts until the end of World War II—from North Africa to the Eastern Front.
The Type 82/3 was an armored version of the Volkswagen Kübelwagen (passenger car, K1 Type 82).
It was also known as a "dummy tank" and was used to deceive the enemy.
The dummy armored vehicle was flanked by simple metal structures that mimicked the tracks of a tank, but the turret, equipped with a machine gun, was real.
The vehicle had no doors; entry was through the turret hatch.
They were intended to replace the Kfz 13 armored vehicles and were primarily used in Russia.
