The Chevrolet G7117 was part of the American G506 series of 1.5-ton 4×4 trucks, which were produced in large numbers during World War II. Unlike the standard G7107 truck, the G7117 came equipped with a front-mounted winch as standard, making it particularly suitable for operations in difficult terrain. Powered by a Chevrolet inline-six gasoline engine, the vehicles were noted for their high reliability, off-road capability, and ease of maintenance. In total, around 150,000 vehicles of the G506 family were produced in numerous variants—ranging from cargo trucks and mobile workshops or tankers to recovery and repair vehicles.

The U.S. Army deployed the G7117 in almost every theater of war, including North Africa, Italy, Northwest Europe, and the Pacific. Thanks to the Lend-Lease program, many vehicles also reached Allied nations, including the Soviet Union, Great Britain, and Brazil. Engineer, maintenance, and supply units, in particular, valued the G7117 for its robust construction and versatility.
