At the beginning of World War II, Germany relied heavily on horse-drawn artillery, which was clearly unsatisfactory in terms of mobility.
One solution was to mount artillery howitzers on surplus tracked chassis, such as the Czech-made Panzer 38(t).
This resulted in the Grille, equipped with a 15 cm sIG.33 infantry gun.
Due to a shortage of the new 38(t) Ausf. M hull, the first 91 Grilles were based on the older Ausf. H hull with a rear engine.
