With few well-paved roads, rain and snow could make the terrain virtually impassable, as Germany discovered in its first winter of 1941/42.
Faced with these difficult conditions, the Germans realized they needed special tracked vehicles to traverse Russia's roads and countryside.
The Raupenschlepper Ost (RSO for short) offered a solution.
The RSO was originally designed as a tractor and tow tractor for artillery pieces, but later found a variety of uses.
The fully tracked vehicle proved its worth in muddy terrain, and various manufacturers produced 23,000 vehicles by the end of the war. The RSO/03 was a later variant with a simple metal cab and fabric roof. It was powered by a Deutz diesel engine to a top speed of 30 km/h. A pintle was attached to the rear for towing artillery pieces.
