This led to the development of the Panzer IV/70 (A), starting in 1944.
To minimize development time, the vehicle was based on the hull of the Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. J, which was already in production at the time.
This hull was fitted with a casemate-style superstructure and the long-barreled 7.5 cm L/70 gun.
The Panzer IV/70 (A) was equipped with wire-mesh side skirts known as "Thoma Schürzen."
A total of approximately 280 units were produced and deployed on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
