The Flakpanzer 38(t) (Sd.Kfz.140), which officially entered service on October 15, 1943, served as an interim anti-aircraft platform before the Flakpanzer IV was deployed.
Based on the mid-engined 38(t) Ausf.M designed in the Czech Republic, the fighting compartment was mounted at the rear of the vehicle.
The anti-aircraft tank was equipped with a single 2 cm FlaK38 and had 1040 rounds of ammunition.
As a preliminary anti-aircraft tank design, it had obvious shortcomings, such as: B. limited armor protection for the crew and a lack of firepower due to the relatively small main armament.
BMM produced only 141 such vehicles between November 1943 and February 1944.
Many of them were deployed on the Western Front in units such as the 12th SS Panzer Division “Hitler Youth”.
The upper armor plates could be folded down to allow 360° rotation of the gun.
This also meant that the weapon could be used against ground targets.
