The Bergepanzer IV was created by converting Panzer IV chassis from which the turret had been removed. The resulting opening was typically sealed with a simple cover that also served as a work platform. The vehicle carried extensive recovery and repair equipment, enabling it to tow damaged tanks and support repairs in the frontline area. Depending on the specific version, its equipment included towing bars, tools, lifting devices, and a portable A-frame hoist.
