The M4 Sherman was the backbone of Allied tank units.
Over 40,000 units were produced starting in 1942.
The ubiquitous Sherman was found in all Allied armies and on all fronts during World War II.
One of the most easily recognizable variants was the M4A1, which used a cast hull instead of the welded hull of other models.
Later, a 76 mm gun was introduced to give the tank more power against heavily armored German opponents.
However, this required the installation of a new turret large enough to carry the gun.
The combination of the M4A1 hull, 76 mm gun, and turret resulted in the M4A1(76)W.
