The early production M7 Howitzer Motor Carriage (HMC), most of which were produced before America entered World War II, was widely used by the British Commonwealth in the Mediterranean.
These self-propelled guns were built in mid- to late 1942 based on the M3 hull.
Distinguishing features included side armor without hinge extensions, a flatter ring for the machine gun "pulpit," and an earlier rear design.
The British called them "Priest," reflecting the machine gun ring's resemblance to a pulpit and the British practice of naming self-propelled guns after the titles of church officials.
The M7 was equipped with a 105 mm howitzer and formed the backbone of the U.S. Armored Division's armored artillery.
It was highly regarded and many of the early production models also saw service in Europe, including some assigned to the Free French.
