Rapier is a surface-to-air missile developed for the British Army.
The system is unusual because it uses a manual optical guidance system that transmits guidance commands to the missile via radio link during flight.
This results in high accuracy, eliminating the need for a large warhead.
BAC mounted the Rapier system on the chassis of the M548.
Development began in 1974 under the name "Tracked Rapier," and it entered service in 1983.
