Leopard 2E: An evolution of the A5a variant, developed as part of a joint production program between the Spanish and German defense industries.
This program is based on a cooperation agreement reached in 1995 between the defense ministries of both nations, which included—among other provisions—the transfer of 108 Leopard 2A4 tanks from the Bundeswehr to the Spanish Army for a period of five years.
On December 23, 1998, the Spanish Cabinet approved the joint production contract and designated Santa Bárbara Blindados (SBB—the Santa Bárbara defense company) as the prime contractor. The Leopard 2E/EX and its components are manufactured entirely in Spain—with German technological support.
