The Leopard 1, which entered service in the mid-1960s, formed the backbone of the Federal Republic of Germany's armored forces and several NATO forces during the Cold War era.
The Leopard's task was to counter the huge masses of tanks that could be deployed by the Warsaw Pact troops.
