The Sturmpanzer served in 4 battalions, with Sturmpanzer Abteilung 216 being the first to be sent into combat during Operation Citadel and the massive clash of tanks in the Kursk Salient.
These vehicles saw significant action throughout the Soviet Union, as well as in Poland, Italy and the Battle of Normandy, although as was the case with most German tanks in the later stages of the war, there were never enough operational Sturmpanzers available at any one time and, unable to effectively replace mounting losses, their numbers in service steadily declined as the fighting became more intense.
Around 306 Sturmpanzer IVs were built, of which only three or four of these distinctive armored vehicles remain today in various museums.
