Based on the reliable and proven mechanical components of the Czechoslovakian Panzer 38(t), production began in the second half of 1943. The goal was to equip the German Wehrmacht with a light tank destroyer characterized by a low silhouette, good frontal armor, and effective firepower—provided by a 7.5 cm gun mounted in a closed casemate superstructure. Low production costs and the ability to mass-produce the vehicle quickly and easily were also key factors in its development. The Jagdpanzer 38(t) "Hetzer" entered service in the second half of 1944 and proved to be highly effective and dangerous; this was largely due to its low silhouette, which—combined with effective camouflage—made it difficult to detect, even for the most powerful Allied vehicles.
