Interestingly, the Te-Ke shares its designation with the Chi-Ha medium tank.
This was not a coincidence, as the Te-Ke is actually a tankette (a light armored vehicle) and not a tank.
It was commissioned by the Imperial Japanese Army as a replacement for the Type 94 TK tankette.
The design originated from Hino Motors, and the first version was completed in 1936.
Due to successful trials, further revisions were made until 1937, when the design was finally accepted. It was designed to mount a 37 mm Type 94 tank gun (as in this model), but due to supply shortages of Type 94 guns, it was also equipped with 7.7 mm Type 97 machine guns.
A total of 616 of these tankettes were produced between 1938 and 1944.
It saw service with the Imperial Japanese Army in the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II.
