Based on the Leopard 2 A5, the Leopard was given a more powerful weapon system in 1999 and introduced as the Leopard 2 A6. The caliber length of the 120mm Rheinmetall smoothbore gun was increased by 1.3m to L/55. In conjunction with the new LKE II ammunition, the combat armor, now known as the Leopard 2 A6, is capable of penetrating the turret front of a T-80 at a distance of over 3,000m.
In 2001, the 403rd Panzer Battalion was the first Bundeswehr unit to be equipped with the A6.
In 2005, work began on converting the smoke grenade launcher to a new Type 6/2, which can fire other types such as bomblets in addition to smoke ammunition.
