In 2016, work began on upgrading the existing Leopard 2 A6Ms with upgrades from the Leopard 2 A7 program. This includes the installation of the external intercom at the rear, along with a modification of the tow cable routing, and the installation of the ultracapacitor on the fighting compartment roof.
During the conversion period, the upgraded Leopards will be designated A6M+. After the upgrades are completed, all Leopard 2 A6Ms will be renamed "simply" A6M.
