The ZiS-3 was designed in 1940 and was a 76.2 mm divisional field gun that used the same carriage as the ZiS-2. Originally developed as a field gun, it could also be used for direct aiming and, with tank shells, became one of the best anti-tank guns of World War II, so that it was rarely used in its actual role as a field gun. The German soldiers nicknamed it "Ratsch-Bumm" because the firing and impact noises overlapped due to the high muzzle velocity and the short combat distance. Over 100,000 examples were built. Captured ZiS-3s were used by the Wehrmacht under the designation FK288(r).
