In the 1930s, Skoda's development department developed a design for a modern 37mm anti-tank gun (Intern A3), which was later accepted by the Czechoslovak army and designated 3.7 cm KPUV vz.34 (KPUV stands for Kanon Proti Utocne Vozbe, anti-tank gun ) was used. Not resting on its laurels, the Skoda design team developed a modernized model, dubbed the A4, which achieved excellent results during its testing, significantly surpassing the original 3.7cm KPUV. However, the new type used a different type of ammunition, so the breech had to be redesigned to also use the older ammunition. After that, nothing stood in the way of the A4 gun being adopted by the Czechoslovak army, which put it into service under the designation 3.7 cm KPUV vz.37. At that time, this weapon was the best in the world in its category. The guns came in several variants, including the Type M, which could be carried behind a motorized vehicle. The A4 guns were also exported to Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Hungary, among others. In 1938 almost a thousand KPUV guns of both types were ready to defend Czechoslovakia, including 390 vz.37 P and 300 vz.37 M. The 3.7cm -KPUV vz.37 was capable of penetrating the armor of all Wehrmacht tanks. Ultimately, however, these guns were first used in combat by the German Wehrmacht after they realized that the Czechoslovak guns were superior to the German ones. They entered service under the designation 3.7cm PAK 37(t). They proved their effectiveness in the campaigns in Poland, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Only the attack on the Soviet Union made the 3.7cm guns obsolete, as they were no longer effective against the new Soviet medium and heavy tanks. Nevertheless, the guns remained in service almost until the end of the war. Its users included the army of the Slovak state, built on the rubble of former Czechoslovakia. The Slovak Army also used the 3.7cm guns against the USSR, albeit with similar difficulties as the Wehrmacht.
