In Vietnam, excess 20mm ammunition boxes were issued to US troops in large numbers. The extremely stable, ammunition boxes made of sheet steel were absolutely watertight, and therefore an estimated storage place for cigarettes and other moisture-sensitive objects. The 20mm Navy ammunition boxes are very often seen on vehicles of all kinds, primarily on tanks and armored vehicles such as M48 Patton, M551 Sheridan or M113.
