The M1919 was an air-cooled development of the standard US machine gun of World War I, the water-cooled M1917 designed by John M. Browning.
The A4 is the final and most widely produced version of the Browning M1919 machine gun and was manufactured from 1936 onwards.
It was used by the US in World War II in Korea and Vietnam.
However, from the 1950s onwards, it was increasingly replaced by newer machine guns such as the M60.

- M1917A1 ground gun carriage
- M29 skate gun carriage (M2/M4/M4A1 halftracks, M3A1 scout car)
Elevation-adjustable (2 positions) gun carriage on the side of the tank turret, suitable for:
- M2A4
- M3/M3A1/M3A3 and M5/M5A1 (early) STUART
