Civilian air defense in Germany was established by law in 1935.
Its massive expansion began with the outbreak of war and extended to the occupied territories.
For their duties on anti-aircraft patrols, blackout watch, firefighting, etc., air defense personnel were equipped with distinctive helmets.
Towards the end of the war, the Volkssturm (People's Storm) temporarily used these helmets.
Interestingly, they were also worn by anti-German insurgents, for example, during the Warsaw Uprising or towards the end of the war in Prague and other Czech cities.
