The Panzer III was the common designation for a medium tank developed by Germany in the 1930s and widely used during World War II. The official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen III Sd Kfz. 141 (abbreviated PzKpfw III). It was intended to fight against other armored fighting vehicles and serve alongside the supporting Panzer IV. However, since the Germans faced the formidable T-34, more powerful anti-tank guns were required. Since the Panzer IV had a larger turret, the roles were reversed. The Panzer IV was equipped with the long-barreled 7.5 cm KwK 40 cannon and participated in tank-on-tank battles. The Panzer III was obsolete in this role and was replaced for most purposes by the Panzer IV. From 1942, the final version of the Panzer III was equipped with the 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 cannon, which was better suited for infantry support. Production of the Panzer III ended in 1943. However, the powerful chassis of the Panzer III served as the hull for the Sturmgeschütz III until the end of the war.
