The Colosseum (1:500)

Construction of the Flavio Amphitheater, best known around the world as the Colosseum (Colosseo in Italian), began in 72 AD under Emperor Vespasian and ended just eight years later under Emperor Titus.
Built from travertine and tuff stones, it is the largest amphitheater in the world.
It is considered a symbol of Imperial Rome.
The Colosseum served as a venue for Roman society's most popular shows, such as the fights between animals, imported mainly from Africa and the Middle East, and the fights between gladiators.
The Colosseum could accommodate up to 80,000 people, who were able to get out quickly at the end of the shows thanks to a modern concept of seating, stairs and tunnels.
Special textile covers, the so-called “Velarium”, which were operated by experienced military fleet sailors from Misenum, also offered effective protection from the sun and bad weather.
Today the “Colosseum” is one of the most visited monuments in the world and one of the most famous landmarks in Rome and Italy.
