In the 1960s, the People's Liberation Army Air Force and Navy were equipped with F-6 and F-7 (MiG-21) fighter aircraft.
The aircraft most commonly used for pilot training at the time was the subsonic FT-5 trainer, which, however, was not suitable for training supersonic pilots.
Therefore, the People's Liberation Army Air Force requested a trainer for this purpose and other flight missions with two seats.
The aircraft manufacturer Shenyang Aircraft designed and developed this trainer based on the F-6 prototype.
It completed its first test flight on November 6, 1970, and in January 1972, it was transferred to the People's Liberation Army Air Force for experimental test flights.
Production of the trainer was approved in November 1973, and continued until 1986, when the last FT-6 was built.
