The Mercedes-Benz 250 GD Wolf EULe is a specialised reconnaissance variant of the Bundeswehr’s light utility vehicle and serves as the mobile carrier for the Elektronisches Unterstützungsgerät leicht (EULe), a lightweight electronic support system used by Germany’s electronic warfare units. It is based on the short-wheelbase W461 Wolf with a 2,400 mm wheelbase and enclosed hardtop body, whose compact dimensions and high cross-country mobility allow reconnaissance teams to deploy rapidly and with a relatively low visual signature. The 4×4 is powered by the 2.5-litre OM 602 five-cylinder diesel engine producing 68 kW (92 hp). Selectable four-wheel drive, high- and low-range gearing and differential locks on both axles provide the high off-road capability characteristic of the Wolf. The 24-volt electrical system corresponds to Bundeswehr military standards; for the basic vehicle, the Bundeswehr quotes a permissible gross weight of approximately 2.95 tonnes, a top speed of up to 123 km/h and a road range of around 600 kilometres.
The defining feature of this variant is the EULe mission equipment package developed by Rohde & Schwarz, a passive electronic reconnaissance and surveillance system covering a frequency range of approximately 0.1 MHz to 3,000 MHz. The system is designed to detect and monitor electromagnetic emissions, determine their direction and conduct near-sensor evaluation, thereby contributing to the identification of hostile radio activity and to the creation of an electronic order of battle. Unlike an electronic jamming system, EULe does not actively interfere with opposing communications but operates purely as a reconnaissance sensor. The required receiver, processing and operator equipment is installed in the enclosed rear section of the Wolf, with the associated antenna and direction-finding equipment forming the most characteristic external features. The Bundeswehr describes EULe as a reconnaissance system with direction-finding and detection capability and continued to operate Wolf-based systems with electronic warfare units into the 2010s and early 2020s. For overseas deployments, the EULe system was also installed on protected platforms such as the Dingo 1, while the Wolf offered particular advantages as a light reconnaissance carrier through its small size, high tactical mobility and ability to occupy comparatively inconspicuous positions.
