Development of the 8-inch M1 Howitzer began in 1919 and led to the M1920 Howitzer, but the program was initially discontinued until revived in 1927.
The first photos of the M1 howitzer on its redesigned gun carriage appeared in 1931, but development was slowed by the Great Depression. The T3 was standardized in 1940 as the M1 8-inch howitzer.
The M1 saw service in the United States during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
During World War II 59 battalions were raised, 39 of which served in Northwest Europe and Italy and three in the Pacific.
