Furthermore, the S-64E has proven itself to be one of the most effective aerial platforms for combating large-scale wildfires.
The firefighting variant of the S-64E is equipped with a specialized water tank system boasting a capacity of 2,650 gallons (approx. 10,000 liters). The tank doors are microprocessor-controlled, enabling pilots to select the most effective water-delivery method based on prevailing operational conditions.
The system automatically adjusts the discharge rate to match the helicopter's airspeed, thereby ensuring the precise delivery of water or fire retardants directly over the fire source.
One of the helicopter's key advantages is its ability to refill its tank while in flight using two distinct systems: a "Pond Snorkel" or a "Sea Snorkel." The Sea Snorkel, in particular, allows the helicopter to scoop up water while flying at low altitude—just above the water's surface—at speeds of up to 35 to 45 knots (65–84 km/h). Thanks to this capability, the S-64E can drop up to 30,000 gallons (approx. 114,000 liters) of water per hour over a wildfire.
The S-64E, in its firefighting configuration, is successfully deployed in numerous countries worldwide—including Italy, Greece, Turkey, South Korea, and Australia, where one of the helicopters became widely known by the nickname "Eric the Water Bomber." In the United States, too, this type of helicopter is actively utilized by organizations such as the US Forest Service (USFS) and the Los Angeles Fire Department.
