S.L.C. MAIALE with crew

Based on the experiences and successes of the Italian Regia Marina in World War I, from 1935 Teseo Tesei and Elios Toschi developed and perfected the Siluro a Lenta Corsa (SLC), which was known by its nickname "Maiale" (pig).
This torpedo was modified to be operated underwater by two divers equipped with breathing apparatus.
He was supposed to carry high-explosive warhead under the keel of enemy ships.
The modified torpedoes had a limited speed, were equipped with a guidance system, and contained batteries that powered the electric motor, which guaranteed a range of 12–15 miles.
A notable action by these Italian naval raiders took place on December 19, 1941.
Dile SLC were transported from the submarine "Scirè" to the heavily defended port of Alexandria.
There they were able to attack the Royal Navy battleships HMS Valiant and HMS Queen Elisabeth and put them out of action for several months.
