With a length of approximately 155 meters, a displacement of around 9,200 tons, and a crew of over 320 personnel, it ranks among today's most capable multi-mission destroyers. The ship is powered by four General Electric LM2500 gas turbines delivering a total output of approximately 100,000 shaft horsepower, enabling speeds in excess of 35 knots. The Aegis combat system forms the heart of its sensor and weapons technology, integrating radar, fire-control, and weapon systems into a state-of-the-art platform for air, surface, and missile defense. Its armament includes a 127mm Mk 45 gun, 96 Mk 41 Vertical Launch System cells for air-defense, cruise, and anti-submarine missiles, a Phalanx Close-In Weapon System, torpedo tubes, and autocannons for close-range defense. Two shipboard MH-60R Seahawk helicopters significantly enhance the vessel's capabilities in anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and surface warfare.
Since commissioning, the USS Michael Murphy has participated in numerous international exercises and deployments in the Pacific, the Indian Ocean, and the Middle East. Her missions include escorting carrier strike groups, air and missile defense, anti-submarine warfare, maritime security operations, and missions to uphold freedom of navigation on international sea lanes. With her modern equipment, high operational readiness, and versatile capabilities, she embodies the role of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer as the backbone of the U.S. surface fleet and ranks among the most capable warships of her class.
