From the end of 1942, projects for new submarine types were developed in Germany.
The designers focused primarily on increasing the speed and range of the boats.
This was achieved by increasing battery capacity, the power of the electric motors, and a new hull design. A snorkel and a sophisticated hydroacoustic device were installed to reduce engine and propeller noise. By mid-1943, projects for "electric submarines" had been designed—Type XXI ocean-going submarines and Type XXIII small coastal submarines.
Type XXIII submarines were built in series. The plan was to build approximately 1,000 units.
Final assembly took place at the Deutsche Werft shipyard in Hamburg and the Germania Werft shipyard in Kiel.
The first U-boat (U 2321) was delivered on June 12, 1944.
By the end of the war, 63 ships had been built.
From February 1945, six U-boats (U 2321, 2322, 2324, 2326, 2329, and 2336) conducted ten patrols and sank four Allied merchant ships without losses.
On May 7, 1945, U 2336 sank two steamers. These were the last German U-boat victories of World War II.
After the war, U 2353 was handed over to the USSR and served as N-31 in the Soviet Navy until 1953. 19
In 1956, the sunken submarines U 2365 and U 2367 were salvaged and, as "Hai" and "Hecht," were the first submarines of the German Federal Navy.
