Between 1940 and 1945, 568 units were launched, beginning with U-69.
The Type VIIC saw service at the beginning of World War II toward the end of the Battle of the Atlantic, the so-called "First Happy Time," when U-boats inflicted heavy losses on the British Royal Navy and Allied ships.
Between January and August 1942, German U-boats attacked U.S. Navy and merchant ships in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of North America, inflicting heavy losses, during a phase of World War II known as the "Second Happy Time."
The Type VIIC was the most widely used U-boat when Allied efforts finally thwarted the U-boat campaign in late 1943/early 1944.
