The heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen was one of the most famous German warships of World War II and belonged to the Admiral Hipper class. By 1945, the ship bore the heavy marks of war and was, in some technical respects, outdated. Following operations in the Baltic Sea, the Prinz Eugen was primarily deployed to support German ground forces. Armed with eight 20.3 cm guns, she was capable of shelling Soviet positions and troops along the coast. In March and April 1945, she supported German units in the Danzig and Samland areas, among others, and carried out further fire-support missions until the end of the war.

Characteristic of the Prinz Eugen in her 1945 configuration were numerous retrofitted anti-aircraft weapons, additional light flak positions, and an equipment layout that differed significantly from her original state. Her heavy artillery - comprising four twin turrets - remained unchanged, whereas her anti-aircraft armament had been substantially reinforced over the course of the war. On May 8, 1945, the ship was in Copenhagen, where she was surrendered to British forces following Germany's capitulation. Later, as part of the division of German warships, she was allocated to the USA and subsequently used in the "Operation Crossroads" nuclear weapons tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946.
