Piper L-4 Grasshopper "Africa to Central Europe"

The US military, as well as the British RAF, soon realized that the rather large and complicated types like O-47 or Lysander were too big for artillery observation and liaison roles.
Lighter aircraft capable of very short takeoffs and landings proved much more successful.
And perhaps the most famous of all the types in this category is the Piper L-4 Grasshopper, which was developed from the civilian J-3 Cub that performed really well during US Army pre-war exercises.
