The English Electric Lightning was a British fighter aircraft that served as an interceptor in the 1960s, 1970s and into the late 1980s. It remains the only British designed and built fighter capable of reaching Mach 2.
Introduced in 1962, the F2 was heavily modified in 1968, producing the F2A with squared-off tail fin, kinked wing leading edges and enlarged belly tank, giving an improved flight time of around 2 hours.
