The medium-weight Pz.Kpfw. IV (Panzerkampfwagen IV, or Panzer IV for short) was in service from the first to the last day of World War II! This workhorse of the German Panzerwaffe was also the most widely produced German main battle tank. Although always overshadowed by the far more impressive Tigers and Panthers, it nevertheless formed the backbone of the armored units of the Army and Waffen-SS. Its mass production was far easier for the German industry, which was increasingly plagued by air raids, than for the Tiger or Panther. Initially, it was armed with a short 7.5 cm KwK L/24 cannon, but from 1941 onwards, this gun revealed its weaknesses in combat against enemy tanks such as the T-34 and KW-1/2, especially on the Eastern Front. As a result, the Pz.Kpfw. IV, initially with the long 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/43 and finally with the 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/48. Various improvements were incorporated into ongoing series production, most notably the armor, which was continually reinforced; however, it still wasn't entirely satisfactory. This three-volume work presents all versions of the Pz.Kpfw. IV, including prototypes and special versions. It also describes combat missions of selected units. Each volume is approximately 850 pages long (including a good 60 color pages). In addition to numerous color profiles, the complete work contains around 2,000 photos and 1,000 2D and 3D images.
