In the summer of 1934, the German Luftwaffe considered developing an aircraft then designated as a "bomber destroyer." The Technical Department (TA) of the Reich Aviation Ministry (RLM) issued a specification for this entirely new type of aircraft, the development of which was to be treated with the utmost urgency. According to the specification, the aircraft was intended to fulfill multiple roles, including serving as an escort to protect the heavy bombers then under development—the Dornier Do 19 and Junkers Ju 89—as well as operating as a combat aircraft and reconnaissance platform. The result was the Messerschmitt Me 110, an aircraft that would achieve controversial renown throughout the Second World War.
