Heinkel He 280: The World's First Jet Fighter
It is hard to believe that Germany had already taken a twin-engine jet aircraft—the Heinkel He 280—into the air as early as March 1941. However, many designers failed to recognize this unique technological lead. Hesitation regarding the new technology certainly played a role as well. Consequently, the aircraft never played a part in the evolving wartime technology; a technological breakthrough was not achieved until 1943 with the Messerschmitt Me 262.
