The Mercedes-Benz Wolf 2 is the Bundeswehr’s new light, highly mobile multi-purpose off-road vehicle and is gradually replacing the original Wolf based on the 461 series, which has been in service since the late 1980s. The vehicle is based on the current military Mercedes-Benz G-Class 464 series, combining the traditional concept of a torsion-resistant ladder frame, rigid axles, low-range gearing and high ground clearance with a significantly more powerful drivetrain. Its 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine produces 183 kW (249 hp) and 600 Nm of torque, with power transmitted through an automatic gearbox. For military operation, the Bundeswehr uses a Euro 3 configuration capable of running on NATO fuels and lower-quality diesel. An Emergency Override function also allows selected engine protection systems to be temporarily overridden in critical situations. With a length of 4.85 metres, a width of 1.90 metres and a permissible gross vehicle weight of 4.5 tonnes, the Wolf 2 can carry up to 1.2 tonnes of payload or four fully equipped soldiers. Compared with its predecessor, it offers substantially greater engine power, ground clearance and payload, as well as a revised suspension system; a self-recovery winch, underbody protection, a snorkel allowing a fording depth of around 75 centimetres, military blackout and infrared lighting, and air-transportability are also part of the overall design concept.
The most important innovation of the Wolf 2, however, is its consistent design as a digital command-and-communications vehicle. It is the first newly procured Bundeswehr vehicle for which the full equipment package of the D-LBO programme – Digitalisierung Landbasierte Operationen was taken into account from the outset. A standardised equipment rack in the rear accommodates modular radio, computer and command systems, which are integrated into a common information and communications network via the Tactical Core software environment. The Wolf 2 is being introduced primarily as a command vehicle and in a largely identical military police variant, the latter fitted with appropriate emergency signalling equipment. Unlike the original Wolf, no dedicated ambulance or airborne variants of this series are currently planned, as these roles are intended to be covered by other platforms. Following the delivery of five pre-series vehicles in 2024, serial production deliveries began at the end of 2025, with fielding to operational units underway from 2026. The framework contract covers up to 5,800 vehicles by 2032; after an initial order for 1,500 Wolf 2 vehicles, procurement of a further 1,744 vehicles was approved at the end of 2025. The Wolf 2 is therefore intended not only to replace the Bundeswehr’s traditional light off-road vehicle, but also to become one of the standard carrier platforms for Germany’s increasingly digitised land forces.
