The Fuchs A5A6 FüFu armored personnel carrier is a modern command vehicle variant of the versatile 6×6 armored personnel carrier, specifically designed for the needs of mobile command posts at platoon to battalion level. It is based on the Fuchs A5 TPz, which was originally designed to integrate modern communications and IT components. The A5A6 version has been further developed without fundamentally altering the vehicle structure.
Visually, the Fuchs A5A6 FüFu stands out due to its typical left rear attachment, which houses a permanently installed power generator (SEA) to power the extensive radio and IT systems. Another distinctive feature is the crank mast on the roof for remote antennas, which, in combination with several conventional radio antennas, dominates the vehicle's external appearance. However, unlike later variants such as the A7 or A8, the Fuchs A5A6 does not have comprehensive additional armor or modular mine protection – the focus is clearly on command capability, not maximum protection.
The vehicle's interior is designed for mobile combat operations: Multiple radio and IT workstations, mostly equipped with SEM-90/93 radios, command computers, wired and wireless communication devices, and situation control systems, enable stable operation even over extended periods. For autonomous operation, an air conditioning unit is integrated alongside the SEA, making the vehicle suitable for both mobile operations and stationary operations.
The A5A6 variant differs from previous FüFu-Fuchs versions (e.g., A1 or A4) primarily in its updated electronic equipment, integration into more modern Bundeswehr networks, and preparatory measures for expansion in the context of digitalization (e.g., MoTaKo/MoTIV). The vehicle body itself remains largely unchanged in terms of mobility and transportability. With all-wheel drive and a 320 hp engine, the TPz remains off-road capable, air-transportable (e.g., with the A400M, after appropriate preparation), and amphibious.
The Fuchs A5A6 FüFu provides troops with a proven, robust command vehicle that enables stable command capability in mobile operations with comparatively low logistical effort – whether in national defense situations or in multinational missions.
